Just some extra stuff I found on Grantham University blog.
We have been discussing this in detail for the past five weeks. The impact is larger than any of us or at least I realized. Although I recieved my education online, I did not know the growth was this huge. A collegue of mine hinted that he did not think online classes were worth the money or as effective. We are not talking!
5 Ways Improving Technology is Impacting Online Classes
The rapid evolution of technology in today’s digital age has made online learning more accessible and flexible – and people are taking notice.
According to research by the Sloan Consortium, more than 6.7 million students took at least one online course during the fall 2011 term, an increase of 570,000 students over the previous year.
Here are five ways improved technology has played a part in the increased popularity of online learning:
1. Video chatting
Ten years ago, video chatting existed, but it wasn't nearly as easy as it is today. Now, students can jump on Skype and Google Hangouts to chat with each other or their instructor(s), work together on group projects/presentations, gain advice on a challenging topic or attend real-time tutoring sessions.
Depending on the size of your class, your instructor may use video chatting for some of the lectures to foster a more personalized online learning experience.
2. Social media
Social media profiles at some institutions are integral to the online learning community. For instance, in Grantham University’s social media community, you can stay in touch with what’s happening at the school, gain valuable tips that assist with academic and career success, and interact with future, current and former students. LinkedIn is a particularly popular social network for online students looking to advance their career. Check out this blog post on how LinkedIn can springboard your job search.
3. Financial aid
You may remember the tedious process of filling out numerous pages of financial aid paperwork, and gathering copies of every personal document you had to send with them. Now, you can apply for financial aid from home. To determine your eligibility for financial aid, the first step is filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). When applying, be sure to reference Grantham’s financial aid checklist to make sure you didn’t miss any steps. You may also check out this video.
4. Blogs
If your online institution writes a blog, subscribe to the articles for tips on achieving academic and career success. Grantham University’s blog, for example, is a great place to get quick tips and tricks that are relevant to you. The comments section is a great way to interact with students and professionals, and start a community discussion.
5. Online job portals
Many employers are happy to work with students while they're in the midst of pursuing their online degree, especially if they feel the student is an ideal fit for the company. Job portals offer students a look into potential job openings, webinars and professional networking opportunities. GU offers Grantham Pathways as a complimentary resource open to the public. After creating an account, you can check in regularly for potential job opportunities.
Improving technology has impacted the way students experience their courses and communicate with fellow classmates and instructors. By embracing these technological advances, you’ll put yourself in the best position for academic and career success.

One thing I have been seeing lately is telephone interviews. I have two friends who have received their job offers through telephone. I want to see the person I hire! I was in line at a gas station to buy a lottery ticket. This guy, with a nice voice started to talk to me. I turned around and ugh! He looked like a monster with his various piercings and colored hair.
