Emerging Technologies (Walden)

Hello Bloggers,

This week our task was to find two emerging technologies that will add to our educational goals for our adult learners.  This in itself is a daunting task.  There is absolutely too much “stuff” out there that has my eyes watering right now.  I feel like exploding….

Okay enough ranting and raving.  I have chosen two applications that I think can help me along the way not only with my adult learners but with my Marine Corps JROTC cadets as well.

The applications I decided to explore this week are “School Fuel” and “Knowmia”.  The links will be provided at the end of the page.

Let us take a look at School Fuel first.  School Fuel helps teachers uncover, manage and distribute the best tools for learning.  From the School Fuel administration console, educators populate app and resource libraries based on subject areas, grade levels and Common Core standards.  Students then quickly access these apps, files, digital texts and links on nearly any device, including phones and tablets. (From the website).

I like this application because we as teachers can manipulate the data ourselves and tailor it to exactly what we want and need.  The key is nearly any device and we all know how many different types of phones, ipads, ipods,  etc are floating around out there. Additionally school fuel supports different software types for all forms of documents.  So, if it is out there in document form (word, pdf, etc), school fuel can probably support it.

Next let me tell you about my personal favorite.  Knowmia, is here and it is what I envisioned during my discussion.  I guess I am just light years behind technology. Knowmia uses video multimedia to teach a lesson in a more acceptable format.  When I first considered going to college, I took a class during my tour of duty in Okinawa Japan.  I sat through 13 Saturdays of lectures and test taking.  That was my introduction into the higher education realm.  I wanted no parts of it because the teacher was boring and monotone.  Had he provided some levity or excitement then maybe! Knowmia currently has over 13K worth of lessons covering just about any subject. In this very format but they are more livelier and entertaining. We are visual and we know it so why not capitalize on our strengths.

Check them out and let me know what you think

  1. Two more technologies which are new to me! Knowmia sounds like a great alternative to traditional learning. I woudl envision using this with students who are visual learners to teach data. Dr. Cavallo states to use digital media for “procedural things that are hard to learn by text”. It sounds like this site would help to do that. I will check it out.
